Ford Street Halloween in Zilker: A Neighbor’s Guide

Ford Street Halloween in Zilker: A Neighbor’s Guide

Austin Living · October 2026

The short answer: Every Halloween week, Ford Street in Zilker turns into one of Austin's best trick-or-treat streets. Neighbors build homemade haunted garages and yard mazes, and on Halloween night the street is typically closed to cars and filled with families from all over the city. Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, so expect a bigger crowd than a weeknight Halloween brings.

Here's how to enjoy it, whether you're visiting or live a few blocks away.

What Makes Ford Street Different

Plenty of Austin streets decorate. Ford Street commits. Ford Street only runs two city blocks but boasts the biggest celebration in 78704. The decorations build through Halloween week, and they lean homemade rather than store-bought: garages turned into haunted houses, front yards turned into mazes, porches staged for the best possible jump scare.

It works because of what Zilker is. Front yards are deep, porches face the street, and many neighbors have known each other for years. Original 1960s and 1970s homes sit next to new builds, and both get in on it. It feels less like an event and more like a neighborhood throwing a party and inviting the rest of the city. Expect full-sized candy bars, spooky haunted houses and adult beverages for the grown-ups. It's a party for everyone. While not as extravagant, it's always advised to begin your evening a few blocks away on the 2800 block of Cedarview Drive in Barton Hills where I always have a fun treats waiting for everyone!

When to Go

Arrive around dusk. Younger kids get the best experience before full dark, when the scares are gentler and the crowd is thinner. By mid-evening the street is shoulder to shoulder, which is half the fun if you're ready for it.

If you'd rather see the decorations without the Saturday crowd, walk the street on a weeknight earlier in the week.

Getting There

Don't plan on parking on Ford. Park several blocks away, or better, walk or bike in from elsewhere in Zilker or Barton Hills. If you're driving in from farther out, leave extra time, because Saturday traffic around Zilker adds up fast. Zilker Elementary is just two blocks away and there should be plenty of parking around there.

Bring a flashlight for small kids, a bag sturdier than you think you'll need, and a meeting spot in case your group gets separated.

How to Be a Good Guest

The house rule: Ford Street is a neighborhood, not a venue. The people who build these haunts do it on their own time and their own dime, for other people's kids. Stay on sidewalks and paths, keep out of yards that aren't set up for visitors, don't block driveways, and take your trash with you. A thank-you to whoever is running the haunted garage goes a long way.

What Halloween Says About Zilker

Streets like Ford are a big part of why people pay what they do to live in Zilker. Typical lots run 7,000 to 7,500 square feet, front porches still face the sidewalk, and neighbors show up for each other. None of that fits on a listing sheet, but buyers feel it the first time they walk the street on a night like this. We have two recent sales on Ford Street and the community feeling, year round block parties and Halloween party were all amenities that we marketed and the buyers are now enjoying.

Fair warning: falling for the street on Halloween night is how a lot of Zilker home searches start. We've represented homes on Ford Street and throughout Zilker, and we're happy to show you what it takes to live here.
